學校歷史
二十世紀初紐約市立學院曾經(jīng)輝煌一時。它提倡精英教育，為許多家境貧寒但學業(yè)成績出眾的學生（特別是新移民）提供免費教育，被昵稱為平民哈佛（The poor man's Harvard）。然而六十年代后受平權(quán)運動的影響而逐漸衰落。
紐約市立學院歷來培育出不少杰出人才，其中較知名者有曾擔任美國國務(wù)卿的克林·鮑威爾和亨利·基辛格以及1997年時代雜志風云人物、美國資訊產(chǎn)業(yè)巨頭安迪·葛洛夫。而歷來紐約市立學院有為數(shù)眾多的畢業(yè)生任職于紐約首屈一指的大企業(yè)公司，包括花旗銀行、摩根大通銀行、高盛投資銀行、大都會人壽保險等。
1921年，愛因斯坦選擇紐約市立學院為其美國巡回演講首場之舉辦地點。2004年，美國前總統(tǒng)克林頓擔任紐約市立學院畢業(yè)典禮演講致詞嘉賓。
