名稱由來
天普大學(xué)1884年羅素·康威爾建立。羅素·康威爾畢業(yè)與耶魯大學(xué)，是波士頓的一名律師、演說家及浸信會的牧師，曾在美國內(nèi)戰(zhàn)期間的聯(lián)邦軍隊服務(wù)過。1882年康威爾來到費城領(lǐng)導(dǎo)當?shù)氐慕艜烫?，他開始向當?shù)氐墓と穗A層居民教授知識。康威爾授課的時間是在深夜，——這些最初的學(xué)生后來被稱作“夜貓子（night owls）”，——地點就位于康威爾所在的教堂，這也是天普大學(xué)名稱的由來。因為“Temple”英文即為“教堂”的意思。
康威爾在教堂的授課大受費城當?shù)鼐用竦臍g迎，因此浸信會考慮將此設(shè)稱一所學(xué)院，并指定了學(xué)校董事會，設(shè)定了正規(guī)的學(xué)校章程和課程系統(tǒng)，取名天普學(xué)院?？低柍蔀閷W(xué)校第一任校長，不管資金與設(shè)備是否充分，康威爾都決意將學(xué)校建成一所“為那些不能通過正常渠道得到教育的人提供接受教育的可能”。1907年，天普大學(xué)將自己定位改成一所大學(xué)，這一定位的改變，讓天普大學(xué)獲得了迅速的發(fā)展。
天普大學(xué)現(xiàn)即不是一所公立大學(xué)也不是一所私立大學(xué)，盡管學(xué)校自己、各類出版物、民眾等都將其定位為一所公立大學(xué)。但天普大學(xué)真正的學(xué)校類型應(yīng)是“State-Related”，與賓西尼法尼亞聯(lián)邦高等教育系統(tǒng)的其它三所學(xué)校一樣。天普大學(xué)的公立資金僅占其全部預(yù)算的10%左右。

條件錄取
天普大學(xué)本科接受條件錄取，語言成績未達學(xué)校標準的學(xué)生，仍然有機會獲得學(xué)校條件錄取。該校條件錄取無需單獨申請，語言成績達到條件錄取要求的學(xué)生，學(xué)校將自動考慮發(fā)放條件錄取Offer給學(xué)生?；驐l件錄取的學(xué)生，入學(xué)后會被邀請參加學(xué)校的“直通天普（Access Temple）”的課程項目。在該項目，國際學(xué)生在修讀語言課程的同時，還可以修讀至多11個學(xué)分的正式本科課程。完成該項目，成績合格，即可直接進入天普大學(xué)開始正式的本科課程學(xué)習(xí)。

學(xué)位要求：要求正規(guī)大學(xué)本科畢業(yè)并取得學(xué)士學(xué)位
GPA要求：本科GPA尤其是本科高年級GPA要求不低于3.0分
語言要求：TOEFL要求不低于79分，IELTS要求不低于6.5分，PTE要求不低于53分；均無單項分數(shù)要求
